Curved Comfort: Welcome

To establish a background for this project, research was done on an architect and a clothing designer. The work of Zaha Hadid and Tess Giberson both use sweeping curves to create abstract forms. The complexity and fluidity of their work was then reproduced to create different objects using the same curved pattern.

Curved Comfort
A Spot to Relax in Nature

This pattern began with straight lines stemming from a single point and branching out away from one another. The lines are then curved using control points. These curves were translated throughout the semester to create four objects, a fabric, a lamp, a sculpture, and a chair.

The curves have a unique pattern to them because of the repetition. The lines are mirrored over the x and y axes, which creates a sweeping curve from a flat plane. The same lines are used throughout each iteration of the process, which creates a consistency in each design.

The final chair design uses this repetition of curves in order to create a private environment for people to sit and enjoy the landscape. The occupant is enveloped by the curved wooden beams, which allows for more concealment from the elements.

Model Images
Below are images from the physical models of each step in the process. The design began as a cut fabric with curves made from paper. The second design created a lamp that defuses light using layers of curves derived from the same pattern that was used for the fabric. Next a sculptural form was created from plaster using a fabric mold that was formed over a round object. Finally the chair design Uses repeated curves to form a unique structure around the occupant.
