Tia's Taco Truck: Welcome

Project Goals

Tia's Taco Truck is a small business looking to create an ordering app for their customers that will display the menu and allow customers to order and pay for their food through the app. The creation of this product revolved around the user personas and I focused on their needs in each step of the design process. The app solves the problem that there is no way for customers to order from the food truck online. Customers want to learn more about the food prior to ordering and want a secure way to pay online.

Helping a small business reach customers

Challenges

  1. Create an app to easily order food from a Food Truck

  2. Design an interface that aligns with the companies goals and values

  3. Provide a secure and intuitive checkout process

Research

I conducted interviews  to better understand the needs of the users that I am designing for. One of the primary user groups of food trucks as shown by my research were millennials looking to try new foods.

I asked this user group about their pain points and research revealed their primary focus was being able to view the full menu on an app interface. Customers also wanted the ability to order and pay for their food through the app in a quick and easy manner.

User Personas

Mike_edited_edited_edited.png

Mike Jones

Mike is recently married and their partner has some food allergies. Mike wants to make sure that the food they consume is free of allergens before ordering. Mike loves taking their dog everywhere they go, but waiting in a large line makes it difficult to pay attention to their dogs needs. Mike wants to experience all that the city has to offer and spend quality time with their family.

Olivia Marks

Olivia is young professional who is passionate about sustainability and the environment. They are creative and love to try new things, especially when it comes to food! Olivia likes to support companies that are environmentally conscious. They love to explore the city with their friends and would like to be able to order food from food trucks without having to wait in a long line.

Competitive Analysis

I researched several competitors of the Food Truck and compared the user experience of their products. Some gaps I found are that the competitors do not offer an easy to use Food Truck app, they don’t have accessibility features and the order process isn’t clear. Some opportunities I identified include:

  • Offer an easy and intuitive app that allows users to order from a food truck

  • Add voice assistive technology to app

  • Streamline the process for order and checkout

User Flow

I created a user flow to diagram the primary journey a user takes when ordering an item. This illustrates the steps from start to finish of a user inside the app. This helps to guide the design process and allows me to see the full navigation path that needs to be designed.

Paper Wireframes

I went through 5 iterations of each page of the main user flow of the Food Truck app. Wireframes include Profile, Shopping Cart, Navigation Menu, Categories, Search, Menu Items and Favorites.

Digital Wireframes

After sketching out the initial paper wireframes, I brought the designs into a digital format. I was able to work through the user experience issues in this step and get feedback on this step before moving into the visual design of the product.

Iterations

After completing the digital wireframes, I prepared a usability study to see how real users interacted with the interface and discover  what pain points customers had with the app. I asked participants to go through the main user flow of picking a menu item on the app, adding the item to their car, and completing the checkout process. Based on the study results, I identified key insights that needed to be changed in the final product including:

  • Better cues to identify where the profile is located.

  • Visual cues for how to add and remove items to favorites

  • Add the ability to scroll through menu items and filter out food and drink options

  • More visual cues to easily fill out the payment information

Accessibility Considerations

Speach to Text.png

Speak to Search

This accessibility consideration allows people to search the app by speaking into the phone mic.

Color Contrast.png

Color Considerations

The color contrast used on the app allows for a variety of users to differentiate between the buttons and the white background.

Navigation.png

Navigation

The app has multiple ways for users to navigate through the app.

Challenge 1

Easy to Order

A key factor in the designing of this app was making the ordering process simple and easy for a wide variety of user. I incorporated a scrolling menu and added the ability to filter out food and drinks separately on the menu so that users could find what they were looking for quickly.

Challenge 2

Align with Company

The company wanted this product to align with their company values of being family oriented and sharing food with the community. I incorporated these values into the app design by using bright and welcoming colors that are included in the company logo.

Challenge 3

Secure Checkout

Another goal of this app was to allow customers to securely checkout through the app and have an easy way to pay online. I incorporated an in-app checkout system and made it quick an easy for users to enter their information and added a clear confirmation at the end to ensure users that their order had been placed.

Style Guide

Adding in a bright color that I also incorporated into the logo of the company really made this app come to life. It allowed the food products to still stand out in a white background, but also have a a complimentary color that looks good with the food product. The typography is consistent throughout the app and gives the app a clean look.

Takeaways

This project helps a small business to make their food more accessible to the public. By using the app to order food from a food truck, customers are able to understand the menu quickly, browse items by category, and have a secure payment option on the app. Throughout this project I learned how a usability study can help to push a design forward. I also learned how to incorporate accessibility into my design in order to make the product more usable for all users.
